Titans, Eagles Duel in SCVAL, El Camino Division Soccer Showdown
Something had to give when the Gunn girls soccer team hosted Los Altos in a showdown on Tuesday night to mark the end of the first half of the league season. Both teams came into the game with perfect records in the SCVAL, El Camino Division at 5-0-0 with Gunn ranked #1 in offense and Los Altos ranked #1 in defense. When the game ended, it was the Titans who claimed sole possession of first place with a 2-1 victory.
Gunn opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Hailey Leclerc perfectly backflipped the ball beating two Eagle midfielders to a driving Ainsley Roh who then distributed a precise through ball to Natalie Hill who struck a shot into the back of the net. In the second half, the Eagles scored an equally impressive goal of their own in the 55th minute on a give and go at the top of the box from Hannah Wendelken to Natalie Nichols back to Wendelken for the score. The Titans countered with a number of close range shots eventually converting by pressing deep in the box to force an Eagles own goal. The Titans improved to 6-0-0 in league and 8-5-1 overall after stretching their current win streak to five matches in a row and three-in-a-row against Los Altos dating back to last season, and now have a full game lead over the Eagles (5-1-0, 6-5-2) heading into the second half of the league season. The Titans and Eagles will have a rematch at Los Altos on Valentine’s Day in what will most likely be a game that will decide the division championship and automatic bid to the CCS playoffs.
