At the Nick Buzolich Classic at Lincoln High School, senior Dash Lee led the Titans, reaching the finals at the 182 lb weight class. After picking up a fall in the preliminary round, Lee took down Evergreen Valley’s #4 ranked Ballesteros with a 9-6 decision in the semifinals, who had previously defeated Lee in the finals of the Webber Lawson. In his finals match, Lee dropped his bout 10-5 to #1 ranked Carsten Rawls of St. Francis.

Senior Koh Suzuki continued his strong start this year with a 3rd place finish at 138 lbs. After picking up a fall in the second round, Suzuki ended up dropping a competitive match against #2 Christian Antonio in the semifinals. He rebounded with a gritty overtime win over #6 (at 132 lbs) Bonilla of Salinas.

Junior Philip Doan, wrestling up a weight at 145, placed 6th with a 2-2 record. After rolling through the first round, Doan was edged by #11 Meheen of Carmel in double overtime, 4-3. After a win in the consolation semis, Doan was defeated 6-3 by #6 (at 138) Barcenas of Salinas. In the 152 lb division, sophomore Calvin Cai finished the day with a 3-2 record, with two pins.

At the Ladies Challenge tournament at Lynbrook, Gunn entered with four wrestlers and left with two champions and one runner-up. Seniors Natalie Cai and Kayla Lin both ended the day atop their weight divisions. Cai picked up four first period falls to dominate her 5-wrestler round robin bracket, earning her a perfect 4-0 record and her first tournament championship this year. Her second round victory was over #15 Chu of Silver Creek.

Kayla Lin was just as dominant, with a bye in the first round followed by three consecutive pins. Her finals match was the only one that lasted into the third period, where Lin pinned #7 Alexandra Lee of rival Palo Alto in 5:06.

Sophomore newcomer Mikayla Silverman also reached the finals, where she was stopped by her opponent from Half Moon Bay. Silverman racked up falls in the quarters and semifinals, including a victory over #6 Hernandez of Gilroy. Hernandez had placed 5th in last year’s CCS championships.
